Independent bookshops find a second life in Dhaka

A bookshop the size of a bedroom will not beat a warehouse on price. It can beat it on the sentence a stranger underlines for you.

In Dhanmondi and along Bailey Road, new rooms are opening with used paper, new paper, and a kettle in the back. Readings are short. Chairs are fewer than people.

Sales remain thin. What sells, owners say, is the feeling that the city still has indoor weather for talk. That is not a business plan. It is, for now, enough to keep the lights on another month.
